EMBA Module 3 - The EMBA Degree in Leadership and International Business Development (L&IBD)
Module Structure
The final five-months step towards the EMBA degree comprises an opening session of four days, four Friday-Sunday sessions and a series of tutoring and facilitation sessions serving to qualify the participants concluding exam projects in business and personal leadership development. The curriculum involves a total of 200 contact hours.
The Business Learning Part
The purpose of the concluding in-company business project is to develop a comprehensive strategy proposal and plan for implementing the proposal. Participants work as consultants to their supporting companies on a large-scale assignment under the guidance of faculty and tutors. The final assignment represents an intense learning opportunity, as it requires the synthesis of functional disciplines covered in the program. The EMBA ends with a presentation of the business project to the faculty followed by an exam. The project is also presented to the management of the supporting company for feed back and considerations of implementation. (A similar EMBA program conducted for more than 15 years in Scandinavia demonstrated good value for money: An implementation in the supporting company rate of 65% of concluding business projects.)
The Leadership Learning Part
The leadership learning of the EMBA module deals with implementation of changes at the organizational level, e.g. organizational restructuring, or the setting up of a foreign operation. As part of the strategy project assignment, participants are asked to describe and evaluate issues, phases and conflicts involved in actual implementation of the strategy plan. They are also given the opportunity to implement a “small-scale” change in their organizations and to discuss the results in their study group.
From the beginning of this module, participants will have the opportunity to work with an external mentor chosen from among top Kenyan executives and CEOs. Having a mentor allows for informal and impartial sparring on personal leadership issues with an experienced senior manager.
Participants will be expected to continue to implement their personal development plans in their supporting companies or organizations and to reflect deeply upon their own personal learning and the implications for sustaining learning processes in their back-home, on-the-job situation.
Finally, each participant will be asked to write a report on his/her learning experiences and success in developing personal leadership competencies. The presentation of the report will be followed by an oral examination.
